‘From the beginning of my career as an artist, I have always been in a dilemma regarding the purpose of my art. I have questioned and have been antagonised by the “art for art’s sake” approach. So now, I am determined to express and comment over the ongoing socio-economic-political disparities prevailing in our society’.

Ranjeet Singh completed his BFA and MFA in painting from the Faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and is the recipient of the All India Bronze Award presented by the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, Mumbai. He recently presented his works in a solo exhibition titled ‘The Black Truth’ at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai.

For Ranjeet, art is a reflection of the inner truth of life; and in his case, the truth is harsh. Drawing inspiration from his hometown of Jharkhand and the many policies that govern the mineral rich state and its economically backward tribal belt, Ranjeet’s works question the socio-economic and political disparities that exist in society today.

Why do you do art?

Art is my passion and inner urge. I want to show my existence, way of thinking in front of the world.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I want to work continuously with social issues. I want to establish myself as a responsible artist/human being.

If you could meet your artistic hero/inspiration, who would that be?

There are so many artists, who inspire me… Arunkumar H G, Atul Dodiya, Ranbir Kaleka, Probir Gupta… etc.

Who or what keeps you company while you work?

During the artistic explorations, I love to listen to Sufi songs, folk and classical Indian songs.

How would you want to be remembered?

A committed and socially responsible painter/artist.
